I had no idea that the flu season has hit Minnesota this hard:
Health officials say more than 900 people have been hospitalized as the national flu outbreak hits hard in Minnesota.
State Epidemiologist Brad Crier told reporters in Mankato on Wednesday that health officials are struggling to keep up with totals that increase daily. The state has recorded five confirmed flu-related deaths so far.
The news that an otherwise healthy 14-year-old died yesterday after being hospitalized with the flu since Christmas Eve sent a shockwave through the Twin Cities today. She apparently had a flu shot this season, but I guess she was one of the roughly 40% every year that aren't helped by it. So sad.
I know this is most often easier said than done, but if you have the flu, stay home. In the interest of public health and the health of the rest of their workforce, employers need to not only give people the chance to do that if they are sick. They also need to ease up on the whole doctor's note thing at this time of year. No need to share the wealth more than absolutely necessary.
