In a disappointing, but unsurprising move, DC Attorney General Irvin B. Nathan has declined to prosecute Meet the Press host David Gregory for what Nathan acknowledges was Gregory's clear and deliberate violation of one of DC's stringent gun laws. Legal Insurrection has the details.
As much as I dislike David Gregory and his hack journalism, this is not about getting him because he's on the other side politically. It's about equal justice under the law. Emily Miller at the Washington Times has documented how Attorney General Nathan's office has vigorously prosecuted others for the same and similar violations of DC law. In 2012 at least 105 individuals were arrested in DC for the very same crime that David Gregory just got away with scot-free.
If anyone wants to argue that Gregory harmed nobody and prosecuting him would be a waste of time, I would agree...if the same standard was applied to everybody else too. As Ms. Miller has demonstrated, that is not the case.
David Gregory and Irvin Nathan have so clearly shown us, not that we exactly need another example these days, that laws are really for the little people.
