Less than two weeks until our nation was at war with itself:
In an ironic turn of events, the Louisiana state convention rejected an amendment that would have added a “clause declaring the right of Louisiana to withdraw peaceably from the Southern Confederacy whenever her interests demanded” to the Constitution of the Confederacy. The New York Times reports that the amendment was defeated 92-11, a surprising result in a state that only recently asserted its own right to secession.
