No Way Out: One more reason to be annoyed with air travel these days:
Spirit Airlines Inc., the low-cost carrier based in Miramar, Fla., announced Tuesday that it would charge passengers as much as $45 for each piece of carry-on luggage.I've never flown Spirit and have no plans to anytime soon. And it's not this particular plan that annoys me, but the ongoing nickel and dime pricing plans that are so prevalent now. When I went out to LA over Christmas, I did my usual one checked bag and my laptop bag that went under the seat. I paid $20 more for the checked bag, but that's okay since I absolutely detest the hassle of schlepping an extra bag through security and all across the terminal and then finding space in the overhead bins. If it was up to me, that would be the standard included in each fare: one carry on, one checked bag. Just give me the freakin' price.
Avatar: My niece and nephew were in town last week and wanted to see Avatar, so I told them to go to hell. No, of course not, I took them to a Friday afternoon showing. They loved it. Me? I gave it a "B", mainly because the cinematography was pretty amazing. There's still a little cartoonish aspect to the CGI, but it's pretty darn good. And the 3D gave me a few chills, especially when it came to the scenes with some dizzying heights. Spooky.
My enthusiasm for seeing it had been dampened a bit by the reviews that hammered it for its trite plot from the always tiresome James Cameron, at least when he gets on his high horse. I don't know though, I pretty much shrugged that off. "Noble natives good, evil corporations and mercenaries bad"...blah, blah, blah. I could quibble with that and a lot of other things, such as how the environment magically goes from brutal to glorious and back at whim, or the silly lack of strategy in the final battle scenes, but...nah. If you've been holding back from seeing it due to the bad reviews from conservatives, go...see it. I'm not saying their criticisms aren't without some merit, but you know, suspend disbelief for awhile. It's worth it if you can.
A for Effort: A CNN producer tries to step out of the bubble and discovers that the Tea Party movement is not composed of a bunch of drooling, racist morons:
When it comes to the Tea Party movement, the stereotypes don't tell the whole story.
Here's what you often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: offensive posters blasting President Obama and Democratic leaders; racist rhetoric spewed from what seems to be a largely white, male audience; and angry protesters rallying around the Constitution.
Well, I'll give Shannon Travis credit for what is easily one of the fairest and respectful posts I've seen from anyone in the mainstream media. But his third paragraph contains a flatout lie:
Case in point: During the health care debate last month, opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. The incidents made national headlines, and they provided Tea Party opponents with fodder to question the movement.
Mr. Travis? That is simply not true. Despite all of the video cameras present at that scene, nobody has produced one single shred of evidence that any racial slur was ever shouted, and the spitting incident was clearly an accidental, if still crass, spray from an over exuberant protester. Propagating this crap destroys any shred of credibility that you or CNN might have earned otherwise. You need to come clean on this, or stay firmly planted as "lamestream media" in the minds of a huge segment of the American people.
