What to say about the train wreck called "health care reform"? Seriously, I'm kind of baffled about how to do anything but express my general disgust.
One day there's a bill and a CBO score on costs. The next day, I'm reading about changes and how they're waiting for the CBO analysis. This or that is in, then it's out. Then there's the whole procedural mess of voting on one bill and then, trust us, we'll change it. It's the most remarkable legislative clusterf*ck I've ever seen. Maybe the most remarkable in history.
The only thing I'm certain of is that the sum is going to be a disaster if Democrats succeed in ramming this through. There are real issues that need to be addressed, but my confidence that this "reform" will fix them with 2400 pages(or is it 2700?) of legislation and dozens of advisory committees is zero.
The core issue with health care for most Americans is cost. Government imposed market distortions have turned the industry into a tangled mess of mandates, shifted costs, stupid policies, and entitlements. The sad fact of the matter is that these clowns in Washington are the very ones that created this mess over the last forty years and if you think that giving them even more control is going to make it better, I'm sorry, but you're high.
Those inside the bubble can debate this or that fine point all they want, but to me the whole thing has devolved into a debacle from which nothing good will come. That's not exactly a detailed analysis, I know, but it's obvious to anyone who is willing to step back and look at it honestly. What a disaster.
More: President Obama is not my guy, but I have tried to be respectful in any criticism because he is my president and because I bitterly hated the way too many Democrats so casually trashed and were disrespectful of President Bush. He's really pushing me to the edge though with his over the top demonizing of the insurance companies. His address on Monday in Philadelphia was appalling in its outright dishonesty and demagoguery. Health care inflation is not coming from the insurance companies, it's coming from the service providers and their suppliers. We can squeeze every last ounce of profit out of health insurance and prices to the consumer will still rise at an unaffordable rate. There's honest difference of opinion and then there's bullshit. President Obama, in his desperation, is now shoveling out unadulterated BS that is only going to wreck his credibility even further. YMMV.
