The days of long shadows are noticeably here now in the Twin Cities. A month ago the sun was peaking at about 45º in the sky and according to this calculator at the US Naval Observatory website, it's now peaking at about 34º from the horizon, on its way to the winter solstice minimum of 21.6º. The last holdout leaves have begun to change as well and though we are past peak at this stage, we should have decent enough color for another week or so.
Off to the west there is light snow or sleet in the forecast for tonight. That round of precipitation will show up as rain here, but some flurries are possible for the Twin Cities by early next week. Winter is coming and my prediction is it will once again be a "normal" one here, which means colder than what we were treated to for almost a decade up until last year. The National Weather Service says the odds are the next few months will be warmer than normal, but our friends just to the north say the odds are for colder. I'm going to lean towards that cold Canadian air sagging in on us again like last year. I'm also going to bet we have snow cover here by November 10th, which will knock air temps down by a good five degrees.
One more trip up north I think and then it will be time to get ready.
