You know those commercials where the rampaging barbarians are stopped when the customer pulls out a Capital One card? Well, if you listened closely last night around 8:00 P.M. you could hear a similar sound of disappointment from certain Twins fans. You see, Sidney Ponson actually threw a pretty good game against Tampa Bay and so the local torch and pitchfork crowd(see some of the comments) had to put those away and disperse, for now. Damn that bastard for pitching well! Bring those kids up from the minors now!
Look, I don't think he's likely to last the season and there's a very good chance that either Silva or Bonser, or both, will also fall apart(I hope I'm wrong). But the Twins are 15-11 and the team ERA is 3.87, which is 12th out of 30. I can't prove it, but my take is that baserunning and fielding problems have probably cost them at least a couple of games and they would be 17-9 if not for so many dumb mistakes. If you had told me a month ago that the Reclamation Rotation would have the Twins at this point I would have laughed at you.
It's a long season, folks. We ought to be happy about where we are at and that we have a slew of talent on the farm teams that should be ready when we need it. And we will need it at some point. I'm just glad they haven't had to go to it already.
Geez people, is it that hard to just say "Good game, Sidney"?
