Two feet of snow would be a big deal anywhere in the US, but come on, New England, I could use a little of your famous stoicism about now. And I officially join the growing ranks resisting the naming of winter storms that Ricki noted about three weeks ago. It's a Weather Channel/weather dot com thing and I'm avoiding both as long as they keep it up.
We're looking at our own smaller blast of winter here with some rain turning to snow starting Saturday night. Maybe 10" of snow through Sunday night. That's good, and it will add to the 2" here and there that we have been getting the last week or so. I'm hopeful that the cold air and the more consistent snow means the weather patterns that have kept us on the dry side the last year and a half have broken and we are looking at a return to more normal levels of precipitation. We need it, and the people downstream need it too.
The California manhunt continues. I put it at about 1 chance in 20 that they take him alive. I bet he doesn't want it and the cops don't either. The only question now is if they can stop him from killing again. Shame on the people who are backing the gunman up. Even if LAPD screwed him over, a big if, it doesn't justify murder, especially two young people who had nothing to do with it. Shame on you people.
I read an article yesterday about how the police need to get that former cop because he's damaging the credibility of law enforcement in general. Far more damaging, in my opinion, is a response so aggressive that innocent civilians get shot by the police. I understand the danger to officers and the stress level it creates, but the primary duty of any police officer is to the public. I'm betting that has been reinforced in departments across the country after yesterday. I hope so at least.
#1 Gopher men's hockey is back in action this week as the last hurrah tour for the WCHA continues. The #1 women's team heads to Ohio to try to keep their 36-game winning streak alive. After a good start though, our pro team has tanked despite the addition of two of the best players in the NHL. Go Gophers.
Today's expected decision on which company will build the new Vikings stadium has been delayed. Not unexpectedly there have been tussles around the design to accommodate college baseball and revenue forecasts on the gambling proceeds to fund the state bonds are not even close to being met at this point. Too many big politicians on both sides are invested in making it work, so the stadium will be built. I just hope they don't screw up the baseball part. If the Vikings wanted a pure football stadium then they shouldn't have taken public money. Period.
So where was President Obama during the Benghazi attack? If it was a Republican in office the news media would be demanding to know exactly what was more important than Americans being attacked in Libya. Now we get crickets chirping. It really is true that if we want to see a president held accountable we have to elect a Republican.
