It appears that we have a whole new chapter in the History of Bad Parenting, MN Edition:
A Fridley couple accused of making a 12-year-old girl run up and down a city street in a diaper face criminal charges.
Stephanie Ann Broten, 38, and her husband, 34-year-old Darnell Alan Landrum, were charged Wednesday, May 9 in Anoka County Court with one count each of malicious punishment of a child.
Broten's 12-year-old daughter had already run five laps along the 1300 block of 68th Avenue NE in Fridley wearing only a diaper and a tank top by the time police found her "hysterically crying" at 7:16 p.m., Monday, May 7, according to the Anoka County criminal complaints filed against the couple. A neighbor called to report the scene, which had already caught the attention of some 30 to 50 people that were nearby watching when police arrived.
The couple admitted to forcing the girl to "diaper duty" because she got an "F" on her report card, the complaint said. They also reportedly shaved the girl's head.
I can cite several recent cases where interference with parental rights to raise their children got way out of control. This isn't going to be one of them.
The girl and three other children in the family have been put in foster care. I guess there's not much more for me to say without veering into stating the obvious or muttering darkly about smacks upside the head.
