You can put me firmly in the camp of those who believe that the Theory of Evolution seems valid and is not incompatible with religion. If anyone reading this falls outside that camp, please do not annoy me with Genesis literalism or militant atheism. Thank you.
That said, it kind of irritates me when I read stuff like this:
Prochlorococcus had once performed this function itself, but natural selection decided it was too costly, like carrying the Queen of Spades, and discarded this ability.
Maybe it's just me, but that makes it sound like natural selection is some sort of entity that makes judgments, or maybe something you could invite to a party.
"Hi, I don't believe we've met."
"Hi. The name's Natural Selection, and we've met, you just don't remember."
There's got to be a better way to explain that there was this mutation that proved to be advantageous and it eventually prevailed. I seem to be blocked on it right now though. Suggestions?
