I've been toying with another post off and on today, getting my thoughts together, and was working on it with the tube on as background noise. Andy Rooney on? Is my watch off? No, Mr. Rooney was on early to talk about Memorial Day and introduce us to a display of the pictures of our men and women who have died in Iraq this past year or so.
I watch 60 Minutes more to see what the other political side is saying than anything else. I'm used to Rooney's rants, personally I think poor Andy jumped the shark a long time ago. Tonight the rant was pretty typically annoying but not too bad. Yes Andy, war is a terrible thing, but I still think fighting is better than say, surrender to Islamo-fascists. And Andy, I too truly wish we didn't have to spend all that money on defense. It would be good to live in a world without dangerous people intent on hurting us and our friends. The difference between us is that I still live on Earth, but don't worry, we'll protect your body while your mind broadcasts from whatever planet you're on.
I could take issue with more of his take on Memorial Day but what's the point? I cringed though when they chose Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings to accompany the photos. It's a beautiful piece of music but I suspect most Americans only recognize it from the movie Platoon. It struck me as propagandizing the images of those who've died for us and freedom in Iraq. There wasn't some other appropriate composition they could have played? Am I wrong here?
I ignored that though and watched those faces flow across the screen, most of them so young, each an enormous sacrifice.
Mr. Rooney ended the photo memorial by saying that if someone asked him to describe what an American looked liked he wouldn't know what to say, but that the images we just saw were it. True enough. Those photos were representative of America, some of the best and bravest of America.
The final line though was..."They're all dead". That's it? Nothing on why they gave their lives? Nothing about Duty, Honor, Sacrifice? Just dead.
Oh, I get it.....You soulless bastard.
